Overview
Açores: wines from the islands
In the middle of the Atlantic, where volcanic land meets salty sea breezes, lies one of Portugal’s most fascinating wine regions: The Azores. I recently spent 10 days in the Azores and am excited to share what I learned with you.
Here, indigenous grape varieties such as Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico thrive in black basalt soils, producing wines with crisp acidity, intense minerality and a hint of salinity. Winemaking in the Azores is no easy task – the vines grow in stone-walled vineyards (currais) to protect them from the fierce Atlantic winds. But the result? Some of the most unique and memorable wines in the world.
